HISTORY OF WESTLAKE VILLAGE AND THE WESTLAKE TRAILS

Today the beautiful community of Westlake Village has a population of just over 8,400 residents who enjoy the serene and peaceful environment just 9 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and 38 miles west of Los Angeles.

With an origin of being a cattle ranch, the area was purchased in 1881 by Andrew Russell for $2.50 an acre, securing the deal with a $20.00 gold piece! Russell and his brother grazed their cattle and eventually sold the parcel to William Randolph Hearst. In 1943, Fred Albertson bought the land and the Russell’s returned to lease it again for cattle and Albertson took the remaining area of the ranch for television and movie productions.

Developers with big idea’s and a planned community in mind, purchased the ranch for $32 million dollars in 1963. With the cooperation and coordination of many fine community planners, architects, and builders, the birth of Westlake Village had begun. Preserving and protecting the natural environment to include the enhancement of the area’s environment, helped Westlake Village to be nationally recognized as one of the most successful planned community, suburb and finest areas to live, work and raise a family.

Westlake Village is transected by both Los Angeles County and Ventura County with the L.A. County Westlake Village addition incorporated in 1981. The neighborhood known as the Trails is located on the L.A. County side. The Trails is an enchanting tree lined community consisting of approximately 180 homes.
